Montgeard was a walled village founded in 1317, in the forest of Nailloux, by the King of France Philippe V (The Long). By this act he asserted his authority in the Lauragais hills, the cradle of Catharism and the hostility of the catholic church. Today, Montgeard is a charming, little village on a hill. But it had its hour of glory in the 16th century. Indeed, in the past, wealthy merchants lived in Montgeard: from simple landowners, they had become important figures thanks to the culture of pastel, a dyeing plant with which clothes could be dyed blue.
Discover the magnificent 16th century church, entirely financed by the pastel merchants of the village and the "château", a splendid mansion dating back to 1555.
The village has several hiking departures to the nearby Lac de la Thésauque.
