
Located at the end of a limestone plateau overlooking a meander of the Dordogne, Asques developed around a commandery of the Hospitallers of Saint-Jean-de-Jérusalem. The only vestige of this is the church of Saint-Jean, with its single nave with a flat chevet preceded by a bell tower rebuilt in the 15th century. A side aisle and a neoclassical façade complete the building. In the village, you will find beautiful stone houses, a 17th century calvary and a 19th century wash house and fountain. At the foot of the cliff, the small port was very flourishing in the 18th and 19th centuries. Small fishermen's boats, barges loaded with barrels of wine from the Haut Pays and couraux for the transport of vine stakes and various goods rubbed shoulders.
