School Jeanne d'Arc

Description

This was once the site of the castle of Amou known as "old castle" destroyed in 1569 by the Montgomery protestants during the wars of Religion. It was replaced by the actual building, built in local style, reconstructed from the remaining relics. The building has been used for various purposes
Up to the end of the 17th century was the residence of the lords of Amou, who amongst other duties were governors of Bayonne.
From the 18th century, following the construction of the actual Chateau, had construction of the actual castle, had several uses and in particular was the police headquarters.
In the 19th century the Claye family created and financed a school that was very successful and up to 1912 was a public school for the girls of Amou. The building is now the actual private School Jeanne d’Arc.
