Equestrian statue of the famous local chieftain Vercingetorix, installed on the Place de Jaude.
In 1903, the statue of Vercingetorix was installed on the Place de Jaude to commemorate the young Gallic leader's victory over Caesar in 52 B.C. It was designed by Bartholdi, who also created the Lion of Belfort and Liberty in New York. The project actually dates back to the 1870s, as evidenced by the models preserved at the Musée d'art Roger-Quilliot. The bronze equestrian statue stands on a high pedestal. Vercingétorix raises his sword on a prancing horse, a dead Roman soldier at his feet. The dynamism of the group is talented. The inauguration, presided over by French Prime Minister Emile Combes, was a triumph. Vercingétorix is one of the town's mascots.
