Nécropole Mérovingienne
Description
The necropolis of Civaux is one of those atypical places, totally original, of which there is no equivalent.
Used as a cemetery for more than 1,800 years, the necropolis still contains several hundred Merovingian sarcophagi (500-750 AD), some in place, others forming rows. The originality of the place lies especially in its enclosure composed of sarcophagus lids erected like menhirs, and which already existed in the 18th century. Decorations (fish, cross, chrism) and Christian inscriptions were engraved on the lids: Maria, Pientia..
Classified as a Historic Monument in 1923.
