The site of Mazamas was discovered by the abbot Florentin Reix, parish priest of Bourg-Archambault and Saint Léomer for about fifty years. Historian and archaeologist, he recognized the small device cleared in 1945, when the stones of 4 mounds, considered as the ruins of the Castle of Mazamas, were used to repair a road.
Built in the 1st century, this Gallo-Roman sanctuary is built with regular stones. It includes an enclosure wall, a propylaeum facing east and two twin temples with a square vestibule and cella. More deeply buried, the bases of a Gallic sanctuary, dating from the second half of the 1st century BC are still visible.
Place of worship during several centuries, the sanctuary of Mazamas is not associated with a vicus.
It was classified as a Historical Monument in 1973.
