Château de la Faye

The Château de la Faye, residence of the Seigneurs d'Auriac from the 15th to the 18th century, was built from a former watchtower for the warning and defence system organised in the 13th century by Alphonse de Poitiers to protect the châtellenie de Montignac from the English raids on Thenon.
In the 14th or 15th century, this " keep " was flanked by two massive towers which made La Faye an important stronghold during the Hundred Years' War. The whole formed the southern facade of the present castle. A spiral staircase in the inner courtyard links these buildings together, leaving the dungeon without communicating with the rest of the castle.
The castle then belonged to the de La Cropte family. In 1497 it passed by marriage to a bourgeois family from Montignac, the Arnals, who adopted the name of the land of La Faye. Pierre d'Arnal de La Faye in 1580 was captain of Montignac Château.
