This bust can be found in Ussel, in the grounds of the town hall. It was an evening in March 1890. Ussellois don't know it yet, but they have just lost an illustrious representative whom former mayor Henri Belcourt would not hesitate to describe as a "hero". Marcel Treich-Laplène died far from his native Corrèze, on the Ville de Maceio liner in Grand-Bassam, Côte d'Ivoire. This seaside resort, the country's former administrative capital and a UNESCO World Heritage site, was the scene of a terrorist attack by three assailants on Sunday March 13. This first attack on Ivorian soil claimed 18 victims, including four French nationals. Located 43 km from the capital Abidjan, Grand-Bassam is no stranger to Ussel. Both towns share the history of Marcel Treich-Laplène, who was awarded the title of Founder of the Côte d'Or establishments
