Monuments of the 1870 war

Description

The battle of Gravelotte - Saint Privat pitted 125,000 French troops against 285,000 Germans on a 12-kilometer front. It began at 11:30 a.m. in Amanvillers, and ended at 8 p.m. in Saint Privat, with the Germans doing our weapons a favor. More than 32,000 combatants were put out of action. The glacis between Saint Marie and Saint Privat was named "the tomb of his guard" by the King of Prussia. From then on, the Army of the Rhine commanded by Marshal Bazaine took refuge under Metz's fortifications. After a few unsuccessful attempts, it surrendered to the enemy on October 27. Thus disappeared the country's main organized force. The outcome of the war was no longer in doubt. Several necropolises contain the mortal remains of the combatants, and numerous monuments have been erected in their memory.
