At the crossroad of Avenue de la Grande Fontaine and Avenue du Général de Gaulle, the war memorial was erected by Neufchâteau as a tribute to officers and soldiers who died for their country during the 1870-1871 war. On it are written these two words: “Oublier… Jamais!” (To forget… Never!).
Listed as a “Monument Historique” since January 2000 and recently restored, it is the only war memorial of the Western Vosges commemorating this conflict. Following a demand expressed by the 437th section of the Veterans, accepted in August 1899 by the conseil municipal, it was inaugurated on the 7th of October 1900. Its bronze statue, which depicts a woman, symbolises “France strong in the attitude of defence, ready to draw the sword to protect its soil”.
