Effiat castle

Château d'Effiat was part of a major project by Antoine Coiffier, a friend of Richelieu and advisor to King Louis XIII.
His son, the Marquis de Cinq Mars (born in Effiat) was beheaded for his conspiracy against Richelieu.

This residence is exceptional for the region, both for its style and its history. The château was built in the 17th century by Maréchal d'Effiat, the third most powerful man in the kingdom and father of Cinq Mars.
The main courtyard is accessed via a monumental Volvic stone gateway, decorated with the Maréchal d'Effiat's coat of arms.
Inside, you'll discover magnificent 17th- and 18th-century furnishings, Italian Renaissance painted woodwork, frescoes, Romantic stained-glass windows and parchments.
At the rear of the château, stroll through the remarkable formal gardens designed by A. Mollet.
