Riom has been the administrative capital of the Royal Lands of Auvergne since the 13th century, and is the center of Riom's Pays d'art et d'histoire. The city is listed as a protected area, and boasts no fewer than 16 listed monuments and 57 on the supplementary inventory.
The town's exceptional heritage, a testimony to the rich periods of the Middle Ages, the Renaissance and the 18th century, includes numerous houses and private mansions, fountains and remarkable facades, as well as the Court of Appeal, the Sainte-Chapelle, not forgetting the Town Hall and, above all, the Tour de l'Horloge, home to the Riom Limagne et Volcans Art and History Department, a permanent exhibition space and a veritable lookout point over the town.
