Next to the Town Hall stands the market hall, which bears witness to the old market town’s trading heritage. It was probably originally built of timber. It was destroyed during the Wars of Religion in the 16th century and rebuilt using cobblestones, slate and oak. It was restored in 1896 and 2012. It hosted the weekly markets until they fell into decline. The butcher’s block has been preserved in the south-east corner of the market hall. It has since served various purposes, having often been used as a shelter for hay carts during bad weather.
