Following growing tension between France and Germany, the Belgian government decided to build forts surrounding the city of Liege. The fort of Hollogne made up the 12th Battery and alongside its neighbours of Flémalle and Loncin, was part of the 3rd fortress artillery battalion. During the Battle of Liege (from 4th to 16th August 1914), the fort resisted well against the invaders. Surrounded by German artillery and doomed to destruction as well as the futile sacrifice of is garrison, the fort of Hollogne surrendered during the morning of 16th August, making it the last fort among Liege’s fortifications to fall…
