Cybernetic tower of Liège

The Cybernetic Tower in Liège is located on the banks of the Meuse River, near the Liège Convention Centre. It was designed in 1961 by the artist Nicolas Schöffer. It is his first work of this type and is the largest that he has ever made. This abstract sculpture that is 52 metres high is made of steel tubes forming an open-work framework. It is fitted with blades – of various shapes and sizes – whose movement was originally powered by a mechanism that was ground-breaking for its time. Its movements were controlled by three organs: a lighting system, a sound system and an electronic brain controlling the entire assembly: movement, music and light. Thanks to an in-depth renovation completed in 2016, the tower can now be controlled via an application or via its own twitter account @cybertower.
