Description

The Archaeological Site of Aubechies is the largest archaeological open-air museum in Belgium. Each reconstructed building illustrates one of the great stages in human evolution from prehistory to the Roman conquest. Explore this open-air archaeological park and discover the objects of everyday life displayed in the different dwellings. The Gallo-Roman reconstructions include the sanctuary of Blicquy, a barge and a villa, the highlight of your visit! If your children want to know how prehistoric people built their houses, what the Gauls ate or how the Romans made their swords, then visit us on Sunday afternoon during the tourist season (from mid-April to mid-October)! Craftsmen give demonstrations and answer any questions asked by children or adults. Some of their creations (e.g. Celtic jewellery) are displayed in the boutique. Snacks can be purchased on site and there is a playground. The Espace Léonce Demarez takes you to discover the polytheistic cults practised in northern Gaul before the institutionalization of christianity. Installed in the partial reconstruction of the Gallo-Roman sanctuary of Blicquy, this new museum space, with its totally new theme, will let you get acquainted with the mythologies and rites of Celtic and Gallo-Roman religions. ACTIVITIES: - Feux de Beltaine last weekend of June. - Experimental archaeology weekend next-to-last weekend of August.
