A long, long time ago, in the first century of our era, a woman from Bazas set out to go to Jerusalem... "The Matron", as people called her, was present at the execution of Saint John the Baptist whose head was cut off... Legend has it that she managed to contain a few drops of his blood in a silver conch.
How do you say, Zellé? A soft-boiled egg?
A 'conch', old Zacquet... It's a container in the shape of a shell! The Matron, back in Bazas, had a small oratory built where she placed the relic of John the Baptist, who became the patron saint of the city for the occasion.
Very quickly, the oratory became a cathedral... Over the centuries, it was rebuilt and enlarged to form this magnificent monument!
