Eglise Saint-Barthélémy

Eglise Poyanne 1
Credit : ©droits reservés

Description

This church dates from the 19th century, it was built on the site of the castle chapel made available to the inhabitants by the Marquis of Poyanne at the beginning of the 17th century to replace a previous church. It is dedicated to Saint Bartholomew, one of the twelve apostles. He evangelized Arabia and Mesopotamia, before being martyred in Great Armenia, where he was flayed alive and crucified. Often represented with his skin on his shoulder or arm, he is the patron saint of butchers, tanners, bookbinders, etc. The church of Saint-Barthélemy now houses a fresco by Marie Baranger (1902-2003) and two candlesticks listed as objects in the Monuments Historiques. The frescoes were created by the Spanish Jesuits who lived in the castle when they were expelled from Spain.
