The church, originally dedicated to Saint Martial, was founded at the latest in Carolingian times, when Flavignac gave its name to the Flaviniacensis vicaria, an administrative district of the county of Limoges. Repeatedly rebuilt, enlarged and modified, the current building, while incorporating some older elements, dates back essentially to the end of the Middle Ages. It was at this time that it became a church of the Assumption of the Virgin, with Saint Martial remaining a secondary vocation. The de Pérusse family, who had settled in the château des Cars in the parish of Flavignac since the early 14th century, made a major contribution to this reconstruction, as can be seen from the coats of arms on some of the keystones.
The church has been listed as a Monument Historique since 1926.
