Overlooking Challes les Eaux from the top of Mont Saint Michel, it was built on the initiative of the Reverend Bassat, parish priest of Curienne.
In order to build it, he was supported by numerous subscribers and the Carthusian fathers. It was inaugurated in 1879.
Situated to the south of the old chapel, Saint Michael's Chapel is not quite at the highest point of the mountain, which culminates a few dozen metres to the north at 895 metres.
