Some 30 km southwest of Poitiers, the Gallo-Roman site of Sanxay is a major archaeological site of the ancient province of Aquitaine. Nestled in a meander of the river Vonne, this small Gallo-Roman town was occupied from the 1st to the 4th centuries. 1500 years after its abandonment, the site was reborn through the excavations led by Father Camille de La Croix.
Three main public monuments in an excellent state of preservation are fully accessible to the public: a theater with an estimated capacity of about 6500 spectators, a thermal complex whose walls and some heated pools still have elevations higher than 3m, and a 6000m² sanctuary composed of an octagonal temple with a cruciform peripheral gallery surrounded by imposing porticoes.
A site to discover through thematic visits and workshops for families and the general public.
