Le viaduc de Chavanat

Le viaduc de Chavanat

Description

The Chavanat viaduct is a superb reminder of the railroad line between Guéret and La Châtre, inaugurated in 1906 and decommissioned in 1969. Built at the end of the 19th century, it was used to cross the valley of the Naute stream. It comprises ten imposing arches built of granite rubble. The viaduct is reached via a path that follows the old track opposite the Saint-Fiel station. A pathway has been designed between the piers to access the underside of the viaduct. Below the viaduct is a millrace, a canal that carries water to the Chavanat mill. A similar viaduct exists at Glénic.
