Eglise Notre Dame de Bellac

The church, dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, is the result of successive alterations that harmoniously juxtapose Romanesque and Gothic art in their Limousin expression. It contains the oldest surviving example of the skills of Limousin goldsmiths and enamellers. This is a gilded copper enamelled shrine from the 12th century (unique piece). Shaped like a sarcophagus, it is adorned with gemstones and 14 champlevé enamel medallions representing Christ, the four Evangelists, the Virgin Mary and the Lamb.
