The Vauban Vault
On this point, the Rigole de la Montagne passes under a 120-meter-long vault engineered by Vauban in 1686.
This three-meter-high wonderful vaulted gallery is one of the outstanding features of the Canal du Midi. The construction of this vault, a great technical innovation, left a lasting impression on people's minds. It took fourteen years, hundred of workers and several dozen major constructions to complete this titanic project. The Rigole de la Montagne passes under this tunnel before joining the St. Ferreol Lake.
The Rigole de la Montagne, bordered by centuries-old trees, and the Vauban Vault have been classified with the Canal du Midi as UNESCO World Heritage in 1996.
