In 1922, the veterans of the 1914-1918 war wanted to mark the horrors of that war forever, and so they commissioned an orphan to display the inscription "Maudite soit la guerre" ("Cursed be the war") on his raised fist.
Ignored by the authorities, the monument was never inaugurated.
