Description

Martigues was already a chosen spot for film-makers in the 1910s. In 2007, Prosper Gnidzaz, a passionate cinema collector offered his collection to the city of 2,250 reels and 79 projectors, the oldest of which dates back to 1880.
The City decided to create an exhibition space dedicated to the cinema in his name.
The Espace Cinéma Prosper Gnidzaz was inaugurated in May 2011 in a renovated 17th-century chapel . In the 260 m2 area, visitors can discover the evolution of filming techniques from the first animated images to 3D. In 2013, it became the Cinémathèque Gnidzaz.
All sessions are public, free and non-commercial.

Film is the star of the show with projections and educational events in the 30-seat cinema.
Surrounded by the collection of about 20 projectors, the museum proposes the following tour:
- Room 1: The invention of cinema
A timeline presenting reproductions of the thaumatrope, the zootrope, and cinematographic and other magical lanterns until the creation of 3D.

- Room 2: A tribute to the collector
Prosper Gnidzaz, a trained pastry chef and lively character, presents his passion for cinema in the privacy of his lounge.

- Room 3: Martigues and film
Numerous extracts from fictional films and archives about modern and traditional Martigues.

Activities:
- Running projections: a series of cycles about film history and heritage.
Extracts of films made in Martigues including: Toni by Jean Renoir, La cuisine au beurre by Gille Grangier, Dieu vomit les tièdes by Robert Guédiguian, Marche et rêve, les homards de l'Utopie by Paul Carpita.
-An amusing tour with an interactive treasure hunt + projection
-Discovery guided tour + projection
- Workshop.
