Le souterrain de la Règle

Description

The old quarters of the town boast a dense network of underground cavities. While some date back to Roman times (aqueducts), most were built between the year 1000 and the 13th century. The geology allowed for complex architecture, often on two levels, the first of which was often masonry. In a tightly-packed market town, the need for storage facilities explains the use of this underground architecture. The Règle underground corresponds to the cellars of the former Règle Abbey.
