Eglise Saint-Anne

Meyrignac_église_st_anne-2016-(3)
Meyrignac_église_st_anne-2016-(4)

Description

Rebuilt in the late 19th century (1894) after destruction during the French Revolution. In 1489, an earlier church was built on the site of an earlier one, possibly dating from the time of the Knights Templar. The Gothic portal is the only surviving feature.

The presbytery, below the church, was once linked to it by a wooden footbridge.

In 1793, the church was demolished in its entirety, except for the portal. The parish priest, a refractory priest, was imprisoned, and masses were said in secret in the basement of the barns. The portal bears a certain resemblance to those of Chaumeil and Eyrein.
