DURTAL

Durtal was awarded its 3rd flower in the Villes et Villages fleuris competition in 2011.

Durtal was built on a rocky promontory, a strategic location at the crossroads of major roads and the Loir.
In 1050, the 1st fort was built, then 4 centuries later, a new castle was built on the same site: the Royal Castle of Durtal, a remarkable example of the transition from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance. A veritable palace-fortress and strategic lock overlooking the Loir Valley, it has been home to many of the kings of France. History has it that it was here that the St Bartholomew's Day massacre took place. The proud Château des Comtes d'Anjou still protects the town of Durtal, nestling beneath its walls.
