When you pass through Haute-Rentgen, take a break to visit the 1765 Chapel of Saint Hippolyte and its two “back-to-back” crosses. There is an incredible story to the cross. It was erected in 1480 by Captain Peter Blager in honour of the soldiers who fell during the battles fought against the lords of Rodemack. It almost disappeared during the French Revolution when the revolutionary authorities ordered the destruction of all religious signs in the area. The cross was buried and forgotten until a peasant unearthed it. Since then, the place where it was found has been known as the “Garden of the Cross”. The chapel also houses a curious 18th-century statue of Saint Hippolyte on a wooden horse, which is exhibited every August during a ceremony when horses are blessed.
