DOLMEN DES PIERRES FOLLES

DOLMEN DES PIERRES FOLLES

Description

After following a pretty path through the woods and fragons, you will come across this stone giant, now largely collapsed, in the small clearing.
The building, which is of great historical value, is made mainly of sandstone slabs (with the exception of a block near the entrance and the stones used to set the orthostats, which are made of limestone). It faces north/south-east and the chamber is bounded by eleven orthostats, three or four of which are still visible. It dates from the end of the 4th millennium BC, in other words from the Neolithic period.
It was first mentioned in 1829 by Charles Massé-Isidore. The site was then abandoned for many years. It was even used as a quarry at the end of the 19th century. In 1901, Dr Marcel Baudouin, who had known the site since childhood, became interested in this boulder surrounded by brambles and destined for demolition. He carried out excavations and decided to restore the building, considered to be one of the most imposing megalithic sites in the Vendée. He discovered archaeological artefacts, most of which are preserved in the museum in Les Sables d'Olonne.
