A castle has stood on the rock overlooking the valley since the 9th century. It was destroyed in 1628 on the orders of Cardinal de Richelieu.
At the foot of the old castle (just behind the church in Beaulieu-sous-la-Roche), the bucolic gardens have been landscaped to create a walkway leading down to the River Jaunay.
This development (with a picnic area, water point and public toilets) was recognised by the Comité National pour le Fleurissement, which awarded the commune the Heritage Enhancement Prize.
