L'âge d'or est lié à l'arrivée en 1800 de la famille Vandel qui donne à la métallurgie une impulsion décisive. Plus de 400 personnes vivent du fer et de ses dérivés dans la vallée. En 1870, un incendie ravage les installations, gagne Jougne et détruit 90 maisons.
