A section of the GR®5 linking Lake Geneva to Menton, the Refuge du Col du Palet was originally used to house soldiers rather than hikers. It is a former military barracks built during the Second World War to counter a possible Italian invasion via the pass. It was transferred to the Vanoise National Park in 1965 and underwent various improvements, including the construction of a second building. A project to install a hydrogen fuel cell for power generation is currently in progress to provide the shelter with a self-sufficient energy supply.
