Its roof is composed of fine slate tiles from the former quarry located below Vignotan. In bygone days, the local population had good reason to fear fires. The tightly packed houses and wooden buildings helped propagate them and villages were often entirely destroyed as a result. In 1859 a major fire destroyed much of the hamlet of Villarnard. And a second outbreak in May 1934 also caused a great deal of damage in the heart of the hamlet.
