This fortress is located 25km south of Poitiers, it was built between 1245 and 1265 by the lord of Gençay - Geoffroy IV de Rancon helped financially by the king of France Louis IX known as Saint Louis, to whom he had lent his loyalty. Situated on the borders of the Counts of Poitou and Marche, it was alternately a stake between Françay and the English during the Hundred Years War. The most outstanding episodes would be the captivity of King Jean le Bon in the castle after his defeat at Maupertuis in 1356, and the liberation of the castle in 1375 led by the troops of Du Guesclin.
Classified as a historical monument in 1840 by Prosper Mérimée.
