There are traces of a market hall in Branne (at the location of the market place) in the land register of the end of the 17th century. In 1770, the King of France Louis XV authorized (by means of a letter patent) the holding of a market under the market hall, every Thursday. At that time, the market hall was the property of the Durfort-Civarc family. It was eventually sold to the commune in the middle of the 19th century
The current market hall, which dates from 1895, was built according to a rectangular plan. It consists of 20 moulded cast iron columns (which rest on ashlar stones). The whole is topped by a two-sided roof with two hillocks (with corrugated iron sheets)
The weekly market of Branne is still held on this square, and under the hall, on Thursday mornings.
