It is one of the five gates of the city, was directly linked to the English Way of Santiago and the old route that, leaving Oviedo (Asturias), passed through the towns of Ribadeo, Mondoñedo and Vilalba. However, the most direct connection from one point to the other is in the Ponte Vella neighbourhood, on the other side of the river Mandeo. Above a ponte was located a alcabala, where any traveler who wanted to enter the town should pay a tax.
It has a pointed arch in Gothic style and, in its time, with the characteristic towers present in all the doors of the wall.
