Maison du Maître Tanneur

Eymoutiers prospered from tanning, particularly in the 17th century. The name of the town?s inhabitants refers to this flourishing activity: the Pelauds are those who work with skins (pellis in Latin). Today, the open-plan attics where the skins were dried once tanned still bear witness to this ancient activity throughout the town.
The finest example is the Maison du Maître Tanneur on rue Farge, an imposing early 17th-century house on the banks of the Vienne. Please note: this is a private building that cannot be visited; it can only be seen from the street.
