The church owes its name to the two stone lions guarding its south porch. Its Limousin-style bell tower, vast interior space and relics of the main saints of the diocese make it a remarkable sanctuary. The current building was constructed over more than a century. Only the vaulted volumes date back to the original program. This has been greatly enriched by additions and modifications: side chapels added in the 15th century between the buttresses, an additional bay added on the west side in 1522, new flamboyant-style bays and a north portal. The interior is boldly designed, with three parallel rib-vaulted vessels of equal height separated by slender piers. Also worth seeing is the monumental reliquary altar housing the shrine of Saint Martial, the town's patron saint.
