Description

Classified as a Natura 2000 site, Etang de Murat is located in the communes of Saint Léger-Magnazeix and Lussac les Eglises, in the north-central part of the Haute-Vienne department, around 50 kilometers from Limoges. The commune of Lussac-les-Eglises borders the entire northeastern bank for over a kilometer (where the ornithological observatory is located).
A man-made lake built on the Asse river, it is one of the largest and oldest ponds in the Haute-Vienne department.
Built between 1474 and 1534, the 30-hectare Etang de Murat has long been recognized by naturalists for its ecological richness (water chestnut, litorelle des lacs, kite lucane, marsh copper...).
Close to the Brenne and favorably situated on migratory routes, the pond is home to numerous species of waterfowl (teal, kite, grebe, etc.). Its st
