Eglise Romane

Eglise Romane

Description

The church in the center of the village, probably on the site of a castral chapel, was rebuilt in the 12th century around a Romanesque choir. However, the Tulle cartulary mentions the parish center "ni parrochia sanctae Fortunatae" with a church as early as 894. Formerly dedicated to St Martial, bishop of Limoges, under the patronage of St Martial le Noir, and to St Barthélemy, the parish and church changed patron saint before 894, placing themselves under the protection of a young martyr: Sainte-Fortunade. The legends that recount this change of name relate a transfer of relics from the Agen region to Burgundy. However, a "miracle" took place near the Chabrignac fountain, where the relics of Fortunata expressed their desire to remain in our parish, which changed its name in the 9th century.
