Eglise Saint Martial

Eglise Saint Martial

Description

Former dependency of the Order of Malta. This 12th-century church was burnt down and looted by the English in 1357. All that remains of this period are the window frames decorated with billets on the south wall. It was rebuilt in 1425. The bell tower was added in 1850. Inside and out, numerous naive sculptures, 3 bas-reliefs representing the Towers of Rhodes, God surmounting an Aubusson family crest, supported by 2 figures, probably Adam and Eve, and the Virgin Mary, astonishingly carrying her child on her right arm.
