Chameyrat

Chameyrat

Description

Enter the church, step up to the altar table and discover the tombstone of General Louis-Joseph Hugo, uncle of Victor Hugo. Since the restoration of the church in 1958, the stone has been used as an altar table and bears an epitaph written by his son. To the left of the church, you can see the remains of the château des Vicomtes de Turenne, while to the south, you can see the château de Chameyrat, built by the Vicomte de Turenne in the 12th or 13th century. In 1828, the château became the property of General Hugo. He died here in 1853. His son Léopold then devoted himself to running the Chameyrat estate, where he was mayor from 1859 to 1866.
