The chapel was built with the help of subscriptions. The foundation stone was laid in April 1646. This place of worship was home to the Confrérie des Pénitents Blancs, founded in 1637 to counterbalance Protestant influence; during the Revolution, a political club used it to hold its meetings. At the beginning of the 20th century, the Brotherhood died out with the death of the last of the Penitents.
Following a crowdfunding campaign and the participation of the département, some of the paintings in the building have been restored, and work to dry out the building will complete the repairs.
