Description

Saint-Pierre d'Uzerche is a major example of Romanesque art in the Limousin region, and has been listed as a Monument Historique since 1840. This former Benedictine abbey church dates from the 11th and 12th centuries, and takes the typical form of the great pilgrimage churches. Of particular note is its bell tower, known as "à gâbles", which starts from a square base and ends in an octagonal plan.
The building features three fortified towers, evidence of the Hundred Years' War.
The 11th-century crypt is unique in the Lower Limousin region, and matches the dimensions and layout of the choir, ambulatory and chapels. In the past, pilgrims came here to venerate the relics of Saint Léon and Saint Coronat.
