Church Saint-Éloi

Church Saint-Éloi
Credit : MAIRIE FOLKLING

Description

The first document that clearly refers to the church in Folkling is dated 7th September 1280. The Chevalier Thierri de Marange sold the tithes from “Foureklingess”, which amounted to twenty quarts of durum wheat, seven of bread wheat, seven of rye and six of oats, to the Chapter of Hombourg in exchange for Mass to be said for the repose of his wife Lorette’s soul. In 1302, Folkling, along with Morsbach and Gaubiving, became part of the Mother Court, the original institution of the episcopal domain of Hombourg-Saint-Avold. The Benedictine Ecclesiastical Register of 1770 mentions: Folkling, patron St-Éloi, village two leagues from Saarbrücken, 3 from Sarreguemines and 12 from Metz. On the eve of the Revolution, the parish of Folkling consisted of the mother church dedicated to Saint Éloi and of several annexes (Morsbach, Gaubiving, Emmersweiler, Rosbruck, and Remsing) served by modest chapels.
