The economic development of Metz reached its peak in the 12th and 14th centuries, engendering an aristocracy who built sumptuous residences like the hotel de Heu. Built in the mid-15th century in a Gothic style combining older elements, by a family of patricians originally from the Meuse area, the residence was purchased in 1661 by Anne of Austria who installed a Seminary of the Mission of St. Vincent de Paul here.
