Sarrebourg fortifications

Description

In the Middle Ages, the city was entirely surrounded by ramparts which were erected by Jean d'Apremont, Bishop of Metz, around 1256. These ramparts were flanked by twenty-eight towers. Nowadays, some vestiges remain at the top of the Parc de la Liberté, as well as towers and filled in ditches, on the Poincaré and Clémenceau avenues. In front of these ramparts are stelae in the shape of houses: they are Roman funerary sculptures coming from Freiwald graveyard (in Troisfontaines).

24/12/2024: Following the collapse of part of the rampart, it has been secured with barriers. Please do not cross them.
