The castle is an example of the architecture of the second half of the 15th century. Louis de Montbron, lord of the fountains and of Chalandray, husband of radegonde de Rochechouart de Mortemart, built this seigniory in 1458. Typical plan of the end of the Middle Ages, a rectangular body, flanked by two massive towers and adjoined to the north by a pentagonal tower containing a spiral staircase. the Motte belonged successively to the family of Montbron, then to the Duke of la Meilleraye before being sold to the Count of Artois, future Charles X. at the revolution the Chouans refuged in the underground tunnels dug in the wood and were protected by the inhabitants.
